Progressive Enterprises was the leading player in overall internet retailing in 2015, accounting for 8% of total value sales. This is owing to the company operating the only major online grocery store, Countdown Online. The strong brand recognition associated with Countdown, as well as the company’s price leadership has helped the growth of the channel. Grocery competitors, including PAK’nSAVE and New World, have not yet developed an online channel, with the reach of Countdown Online providing the retailer with a strong advantage.

Industry Prospects

The largest expected dampener on internet retailing is the possible introduction of GST on overseas purchases. The Prime Minister John Key stated in March 2015 that he plans to tighten rules on GST, in order to offer a more level playing field for domestic online retailers; however, this has not yet come to fruition.
