Disposable incomes and the number of women in the labour market increased over the review period. As a result, Chileans changed their spending behaviour and treated themselves with products from the health and beauty specialist retailers channel. Farmacias Cruz Verde retained its leading position in health and beauty specialist retailers in 2015 as a result of its amalgamation with the beauty specialist retailers chain Maicao, which has 90 retail outlets operating in Chile, spread mainly across central regions of the country. The Maicao brand caters mainly to low-income consumers and it is clear that through the acquisition Farmacias Cruz Verde aims to target a consumer group previously underrepresented in its business strategy. The company retained its leading position and accounted for 27% of value sales in 2015. It maintained its advantage over competitors by improving service levels and focusing on the sale of consumer health products, as well as by increasing its output network.

Industry Prospects

Chilean consumers, men and women alike, are expected to become increasingly concerned about their personal appearance and health and wellness over the forecast period. This is likely to support growth in the value sales of health and beauty specialist retailers. Colour cosmetics and skin care products are expected to continue to gain popularity over the forecast period as Chilean men, in particular, are becoming increasingly preoccupied with the condition of their skin and their overall general appearance. Growing health concerns are also expected to continue boosting growth in sales of consumer health products through chemists/pharmacies and optical goods stores. This will be supported by the rising trend of consumers taking vitamins and dietary supplements in a bid to maintain their health, while many are expected to purchase products to correct and manage their vision problems. In addition, drugstores/parapharmacies is set to continue recording steady positive growth, supported by the shift towards convenience in retailing.
