Post-election political instability and a lack of clear leadership, combined with the knock-on effects of devastation from the 2014 floods, has left Bosnia & Herzegovina's building industry faltering, despite the need for reconstruction and the aid coming in to support this. On the upside, the improving economy is likely to give a boost to both private and government consumption. We forecast the construction industry to grow by 5.5% in 2015 and 4.3% in 2016, with annual growth averaging 4.4% over 2015-2024.

Forecasts And Latest Updates

The government has reportedly applied for financing to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to support the EUR55.2mn (USD60.3mn) FBH Roads Floods Repairs and Upgrade Project. Looking ahead to 2016, investment stakes in projects such as the coal-fired plant in Banovici are open to foreign bidders. The result of this process will be announced at end-2015, and could bring in EUR400mn of investment, which alone would account for nearly 2% of GDP.

As announced on October 1 2015, the EBRD will provide a EUR60mn (USD67.1mn) loan to JP Autoceste to build three sections of the pan-European Corridor Vc. A total of EUR300mn (USD335.5mn) has been invested so far in Corridor Vc in Bosnia. Construction of the next 32km of the corridor is expected to start in 2016.

In November 2015, the cabinet of Bosnia & Herzegovina announced it approved the conclusion of a EUR50mn (USD54.4mn) loan agreement with the European Investment Bank for a road upgrade project in the country (SeeNews). The project, estimated to cost EUR150mn (USD163.2mn), will be funded through loans from international financial institutions.
