Grocery Retailers in Serbia - New Study Released

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Fri Feb 19 2016

As part of austerity measures agreed upon with the IMF, the Serbian government decreased salaries for all public employees by an average of 10% in December 2014. This had a strong negative impact on already shaken disposable incomes and consumer confidence levels, which in turn immediately put considerable pressure on grocery retailing in 2015. Consumers started trading down to cheaper brands and also limited consumption of some goods altogether.

Competitive Landscape

Delhaize Serbia, with its Maxi, Mini Maxi and Tempo brands, led Serbian grocery retailers in 2015 with a 15% value share and was closely followed by Mercator – S, which operates the Idea, Roda and Mercator brands and recorded a value share of 14%. Third-ranked Dis was far behind the leading two companies with a 6% share. The leader has a large number of outlets (especially in Belgrade) to thank for its leading position, as well as the fact that it owns the only discounters brand.

Industry Prospects

There are two key factors that will drive the development of grocery retailers in Serbia over the forecast period. The first trend is long-term and is reflected in the general modernisation of the retailing landscape, with modern retailers set to continue shaping retailing in the long-term. On the other hand, the decline in disposable income levels as a result of reduced salaries in the public sector is a medium-term trend that will hamper retailing growth in the first half of the forecast period.
