In 2015, consumer spending power was not at its highest in Ukraine, considering the strong local currency devaluation (which occurred three times from 2013 to 2015, according to Euromonitor International data). Ukrainians reduced their expenditures, primarily allocating their budgets to the most necessary products. Besides, advanced consumers started using the internet more actively to spot the best price offers, considering price comparison platforms (eg price.ua, prom.ua) and internet stores themselves.

Competitive Landscape

In 2015 Rozetka was the most successful of all internet retailers in Ukraine, having its share growing the most dynamically, up by three and a half percentage points, to 31% of the channelís retail value sales without sales tax. The company was a pioneer in internet retailing and paid due attention to promoting the brand image of its Rozetka.com.ua website, involving advertisements via major mass media and building consumer loyalty through flexible pricing, a high level of servicing and ensuring the quality of products. Besides, it regularly expands its assortments with different product types (eg apparel and footwear added in 2014) and whilst Rozetka started with consumer electronics and appliances, in 2015 one could buy cosmetics and toiletries, jewellery and stationery there, amongst many other categories.

Industry Prospects

Internet retailing is viewed as a highly promising channel in Ukraine in future considering its unsaturated nature in the country and the emerging economising trend of Ukrainians. The culture of online shopping and payments with cards is also set to evolve, thus bringing good opportunities to the channel too. Similarly, internet retailing is to benefit from the rapidly growing percentage of the population, from 49% in 2015 to 60% in 2020, according to Euromonitor International. In total, the forecast increase of 68% at constant 2015 prices is expected to occur for value sales to reach UAH29.5 billion excluding sales tax by 2020.
