New Study: Direct Selling in the Czech Republic

Direct selling returned to growth in 2015 for the first time since 2008. This channel has been impacted in the past by reputational problems, which in 2013 led to the broadcast of a documentary called The Goons, highlighting the unethical practices of some retailers operating in a grey area of the channel. This also impacted the reputations of established direct sellers. Things are now slowly changing thanks to the activities of certain companies and a wider industry condemnation of unethical practices. At the same time, several retailers have invested in the expansion of their distribution networks, with this starting to pay off in 2015.

Competitive Landscape

Avon remained the long-term leader of the direct selling channel in 2015 with a value share of 28%, up one percentage point on the previous year. Avon benefits from having the widest network of distributors, while also being the most active in terms of marketing. The company sponsors large charitable events, such as runs to raise funds for breast cancer research, as well as commercial events such as the Czech version of Britain’s Got Talent.

Industry Prospects

The most important factors impacting the channel as a whole will be a more positive consumer perception of direct sellers and the ability of companies to recruit new distributors. In order to improve the channel’s image, the leading companies will together promote direct selling as a safe channel offering products not available through other distribution formats. Companies will also need to position direct selling as an attractive career option because currently the reputation of direct sellers, especially among young people, is very poor.
