Newly released market study: RTD Tea in Cameroon

Still RTD tea posted off-trade current value growth of 13% in 2015, in part reflecting rising prices. In 2014 off-trade value growth was only 6%. However, off-trade volume growth was not as robust, at 6% in 2015, down from 7% in 2014. This is due to a lack of culture for drinking cold tea, as well as the fact that price are relatively high. In addition, other drinks such as carbonates and bottled water are much more visible and affordable for consumers than RTD tea, which is not very visible despite attempts by Nestlé SA to sell its Nestea brand via street stalls.

Competitive Landscape

Private label accounted for the largest share of still RTD tea, the only category, thanks to the products offered in new supermarkets such as Super U. Unilever Ltd was the leading branded operator, present with the Lipton Ice brand, which is present in supermarkets patronised by upper-income Cameroonians or by expatriates.

Industry Prospects

The future for RTD tea in Cameroon is not expected to be particularly bright as most consumers do not regard tea as a cold drink. In addition, most consumers are expected to prefer to drink carbonates, while more health-conscious consumers will seek to switch from carbonates to bottled water and juice. Should the manufacturers of RTD tea try to tap into an increasing health consciousness amongst upper-income Cameroonian consumers and sell RTD tea as a healthier alternative to carbonates and as a change from bottled water, it may help to boost sales. However, such growth would only be marginal too few Cameroonians are likely to be wealthy enough to have obesity or weight problems over the forecast period any many simply regard tea as a hot drink.
