The category is mature and competition from cheaper retailers and internet operators is intense, hampering sales from growing more markedly. However, despite these negative factors, sales in 2015 managed to grow as a result of rising interest in premium shoes, both in terms of more casual alternatives, such as sneakers, as well as classic leather shoes. In terms of footwear for running, two developments were seen over the review period. On the one hand, standard footwear saw some innovation, with running shoes becoming more complex in design and composition, which helped drive value sales. On the other hand, the barefoot trend took shoe design in another direction. Barefoot shoes are often stripped down in order to allow a different kind of running technique wherein the front of the foot (not the heel) is first to touch the ground.

Nilson Group led footwear in 2015 with a 14% share of value sales. This can be attributed to the company’s many retailing brands, including Skopunkten, Nilson, Jerns and Dinsko, with stores located throughout Sweden.
