Although volume sales increased by 1% in menswear during 2015, current value sales declined marginally. Like their female counterparts, Dutch men have also started trading down from expensive menswear options to cheaper fast fashion retailers, which placed limits on value growth in the category during 2015. Additionally, menswear has started receiving a lot of attention recently in the Netherlands, with increasing numbers of retail stores selling only menswear, which marks a significant change from a few years ago. The category has become more competitive, with retailers offering major discounts throughout the year in order to attract male shoppers and this has suppressed overall unit price growth in all menswear categories.

Competitive Landscape

Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) remained the leading player in menswear in the Netherlands. The retailerís strength in the category is based on its nationwide presence and the popularity of its affordable clothing. During 2015, the company became even more popular when it signed former English football star David Beckham and comedian Kevin Hart to front the campaign for its brand new collection of modern essential menswear items. This campaign gave a boost to the H&M brand and also supported growth in menswear as many Dutch men want to be associated with the clothes that David Beckham chooses.

Industry Prospects

The outlook for menswear in the Netherlands remains positive, with menswear expected to record stronger growth towards the end of the forecast period. Volume sales are expected to grow stronger, while value sales are expected to remain modest due to stable and declining unit prices in some categories. At the same time, Dutch men are also shopping for apparel more frequently in lower-priced retail outlets and on the internet, two channels which continue to put pressure on prices in various menswear categories. In addition, demographic trends are set to support growth in menswear as the Dutch population is expected to continue growing over the forecast period. Demographic changes are also set to have a positive influence on sales in the category as young Dutch men tend to be more interested in their appearance than their older counterparts are they are thus expected to buy more fashionable clothes, pushing overall volume sales of menswear over the forecast period.
