In 2015, more than 90% of the incremental volume to the category came from kettles. Demand for kettles was chiefly driven by a high level of equipment renewal and the success of innovative variants equipped with temperature selectors. The enthusiasm for such kettles was bolstered by tea drinkers seeking to obtain the most appropriate water temperature for the best tea-infusing experience.

Competitive Landscape

Groupe SEB’s Tefal, Moulinex and SEB remained the top three brands, followed by Philips, Beurer and Braun. Combining sales from its diverse brands, leading company Groupe SEB accounted for 34% of overall volume sales. The company sustained its leadership in France via an extensive product line, strong brand recognition among consumers and a well-established network with nationwide distributors. With an 18% volume share, private label accounted for the second most significant competitive block.

Industry Prospects

The recovery of the diverse area of other small non-cooking appliances (51% of total category volume sales in 2015) is likely to continue over the next five years with product innovation and households’ growing propensity for chef-like kitchen equipment at home. With a relatively low household penetration rate of about 52% and a high propensity for renewals/try-outs among consumers, kettles sales volume is also set to remain buoyant. In spite of the negative outlook for coffee mills, small kitchen appliances (non-cooking) will very likely remain positive over the next five years, albeit with a marginal CAGR.
