Similar to 2014, the year 2015 witnessed intense sandstorms and frequent dusty and hot weather before the onset of summer, brought on by increased urbanisation and vehicle pollutants. This triggered allergies, asthma attacks and severe respiratory problems, especially among outdoor workers and children. Almost 90% of the population in the United Arab Emirates are expatriates, and a percentage of these are new to the country. This means that the change in weather from the home country also contributed to further triggering these ailments, especially among children. According to paediatricians in the United Arab Emirates, children aged up to10 years are at higher risk of acute respiratory infection and allergic rhinitis involving cough and runny noses.

Competitive Landscape

GlaxoSmithKline remained the leading operator in cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies in 2014 with a 17% value share, followed by Novartis Consumer Health, with 10%. Their recent merger to form GSK Consumer Health made it the leading pharmaceutical company in this category. The player is now able to further leverage on its strong global brand equity and the popularity of its leading brands, Panadol and Actifed, along with Novartis Consumer Health brands such as Otrivin, Sinecod, and Orofar. It is interesting to note that with the merger of these two major companies, two of its popular products in the United Arab Emirates have already been recalled. The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Health issued a warning over the wrong dosage printed on the package of Panadol Baby & Infant in mid-May, 2015. Following this, Otrivin Nasal Sprays 0.05%, 10ml and 5ml batches were also instructed to be removed by the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi (Haad). This was due to misinformation regarding the dosage printed in Arabic. Instead of one spray in each nostril three times a day, it stated one to two drops, which would have led to increased dosage of the product. These announcements led to minimal concern among consumers due to existing brand equity and because the error was in dosage and not the product itself.
