Internet retailing has become one of the most popular ways for consumers to shop in the US. Hence, in 2015, the channel recorded current value growth of 13%. Over the review period most store-based retailers had to add online platforms so as to be able to better compete. As a result, strong store-based players now also command important positions in this channel. Another factor which has favoured internet retailing is the influence of millennial consumers. These consumers are accustomed to using the internet and like shopping online. Moreover, internet retailers continue to drive sales by offering discounts which can only be used with consumers’ mobile phone applications or via codes which can be used online. Therefore, continuous growth of this channel is a result of a very wide choice of products, an increasing consumer base and retailers’ own efforts.

Competitive Landscape

In 2015, third party merchants led internet retailing. These are businesses which sell products via the websites of internet retailing companies like Amazon, eBay and Wal-Mart, to name a few. Over the review period the importance of such merchants increased as their sales rose substantially. Third party merchants accounted for a value share of 30% in 2015, up from 16% in 2010, as more and more store-based and pure players continued to add similar marketplaces to take advantage of this trend. Third party merchants enable internet retailers to save money in terms of warehousing and shipping but more importantly give them a much wider product range.

Industry Prospects

Internet retailing is expected to register a value CAGR of 12% at constant 2015 prices over the forecast period. Despite increasing competition, advances in technology and innovation in terms of payments, delivery and products are expected to drive growth. In addition, internet retailing will continue to grow in popularity among consumers because it is perceived as a convenient channel for shopping. By 2020, approximately 94% of the population aged 15-64 will have home internet access, further boosting sales through this channel. The majority of categories within internet retailing are expected to post healthy growth rates over 2015-2020.
