Juice declined in retail volume terms in 2015. The main reason for this performance was the austerity measures that the Serbian government introduced at the end of 2014. All public employees saw their salaries reduced by 10%, and this negatively affected many categories, amongst them juice. Household budgets had to be reorganised, and juice was not a priority, meaning that many consumers started to cut their expenditure on these products.

Competitive Landscape

Domestic company Nectar led juice in 2015, with a 24% retail volume share. The producer maintained its 2014 volume share, despite the fact that retail volume sales of juice declined. The products offered by Nectar enjoy a good reputation amongst consumers and excellent distribution, as well as strong marketing support. Ranked second in 2015 was Fresh & Co with a 16% retail volume share, followed by Fruvita with a 12% share.

Industry Prospects

Nectars is expected to continue losing share within overall juice over the forecast period. Whilst nectars held a 53% share of retail volume sales of juice in 2010, the category lost three percentage points by 2015 to account for a 50% share of sales. This trend is expected to continue, and nectars is expected to fall to a 49% share of retail volume sales of juice at the end of the forecast period. This trend is a consequence of two main factors. First, many consumers are switching to cheaper juice drinks or to more expensive 100% juice; the category is slowly becoming polarised between the two. Secondly, new legislation adopted in 2013 lifted the ban on putting photographs of fruit on the label if the juice contained less than 25% fruit, and many manufacturers therefore started to pay more attention to juice drinks, which are cheaper to produce.
