This channel is very competitive as technology is constantly advancing. It was challenging for electronics and appliance specialist retailers to keep costs low in 2015. To add to the challenge, online competitors have advantages in terms of cost because they do not have stores to maintain. Moreover, consumers are able to compare products online, on their mobile devices and through different types of retailers, including mixed retailers. Therefore, they are making choices mainly based on price and are utilising stores as showrooms before then making their actual purchases online.

Competitive Landscape

Best Buy continued to lead electronics and appliance specialist retailers in 2015 with a value share of 29%, with sales up 1% on 2014. Best Buy maintained its position due to its presence in both store-based and internet retailing. Its online sales continued to grow at a faster pace than its store-based sales, however, due to a wider inventory and increased number of visitors. Second-ranked Apple saw its value sales increase by 4% in 2015. The company continued to invest in its expansion by adding new stores in 2015, taking its year-end total to 284. It also continued to benefit from a strong product line up and the introduction of new products.

Industry Prospects

Consumers are likely to continue to use stores as showrooms to gain access to products before they buy them. The decision to buy a product is likely to be made after comparing prices and characteristics. Online promotions and free shipping or store delivery are expected to remain attractive to consumers who do not wish to wait for a product or do not want to pay a delivery charge. This is expected to further encourage retailers to increase and maintain their inventory of products so as to make them readily available to consumers. Moreover, mobile shopping is expected to also increase and discounts that can be instantly used in-store may have the potential to drive consumers to physical outlets.
