Demand for plus-size womenswear became a major influence over sales in the category in 2015. Although plus-size womenswear was previously offered by many of the leading retail chains operating in the category, in recent years, sizes 46, 44 and 42 and even size 40 have become more difficult to find in the outlets of both international and local apparel and footwear specialist retailers brands. Many international retail brands offer a wide range of womenswear in larger sizes in other countries, including H&M, but these are not offered in Israel. In addition, as there is no fixed size scale in womenswear in Israel and sizes have become smaller in recent years. This has caused many Israeli women to become frustrated about finding clothes that fit them as plus-size clothing is only available in a handful of relatively expensive retail outlets. In response, a Facebook page entitled "Catch 42: I have nothing to wear" has encouraged consumer protests against the small sizes on offer in womenswear in Israel. These protests came to a head after the Facebook page managers met with the CEO of leading local retail chain Castro, who stated that "some clothes just don’t look good in size 42", which triggered much media exposure for the issue. Alongside the ongoing efforts to improve and increase the variety of plus size clothing available in womenswear in Israel, all of this culminated in the Plus Size Fashion Weekend, which was held in December 2015. Nevertheless, there has been much criticism of apparel and footwear specialist retailers chains which offer womenswear in a limited range of sizes, which encourages intolerance towards bigger sizes and larger body shapes.

Competitive Landscape

Gottex Brand Ltd continued to lead womenswear in 2015 with a 7% value share. This was mainly due to the popularity of the company’s retail brands Zara and Gap. These popular international brands generally suit the tastes of Israeli consumers. The company also holds the leading women’s swimwear brand in Israel, Gottex.

Industry Prospects

Awareness of the strong demand for plus-size clothing in Israel and the general need for womenswear retailers to offer a wider range of sizes is likely to continue increasing over the forecast period as social protests against womenswear retail chains that offer clothing in a limited range of smaller sizes continue to build. Fox Wizel Ltd has already realised the strong growth potential of plus-size womenswear in Israel and the company has plans to begin importing the brand Violeta towards the end of 2016 and some 30 stores are expected to be eventually open under this brand in Israel.
