Increasing prices and decreasing purchasing power had a negative impact on tea sales in Ukraine in 2015. On the one hand, on-trade sales were hit as people spent more time at home and reduced unnecessary spending in restaurants, bars and cafes. On the other hand, some Ukrainian consumers reduced spending even on home-consumed tea, despite the fact tea is perceived as a necessity by locals, has a good reputation and is already a traditional drink for the majority of households. Partially, the reduction was due to the making of tea from herbs picked by consumers themselves, while other consumers reduced consumption by using less tea for the same portion of hot water or reused tea for another cup of tea.

Competitive Landscape

Orimi Trade remained the leading player in tea in 2015, accounting for a value share of 18%. The company’s Greenfield, Princess Java and Tess brands are well known among Ukrainian consumers thanks to intense marketing, including via TV, during the review period. Unilever Ukraine TOV ranked second in 2015 with a value share of 12%. The company’s Lipton and Beseda brands have a very good reputation among consumers, partially due to strong marketing support during the review period.
