Homeshopping declined by 8% in current value terms in 2015. All of the leading retailers present in homeshopping were present in internet retailing and these are generally investing more in internet retailing instead of homeshopping. Homeshopping is far less profitable for retailers than internet retailing and most retailers remain present in channel because as a potential number of their regular customers are older consumers who are accustomed to homeshopping. However, senior consumers are often confident internet users and many of them are migrating to internet retailing.

Competitive Landscape

Stockmann led homeshopping in 2015, accounting for 19% of value sales in the channel at the end of the review period. The company owns the very well-established Hobby Hall brand, which has been present in Finland for over 50 years. Hobby Hall offers a wide range of products from rubber boots to smartphones. Being part of the third biggest retail chain in Finland, Hobby Hall benefits from strong economies of scale and synergies with the Hobby Hall internet retailing website.

Industry Prospects

Demand for homeshopping is expected to continue declining over the forecast period, with the channel set to decline in value at a CAGR of 7% at constant 2015 prices. This is set to be mainly due to the increasingly intense competition that the channel faces from internet retailing, with many homeshopping indeed shifting their focus towards internet retailing. Many of the loyal consumers of the leading brands in homeshopping are thus likely to shift away from ordering their products through mail order or over the telephone in favour of ordering online. Homeshopping does not offer retailers the same growth opportunities as internet retailing and, over the long term, it is expected that sales via homeshopping will become negligible.
