German consumers remained more oriented towards carbonates and flavoured water in 2015, with many young consumers regarding juice as old-fashioned. In 2015 juice posted a further decline in off-trade volume sales; albeit slower than that seen the previous year. Compared with the negative CAGR of 3% in the review period, the 1% decline in 2015 can be seen as an improvement, confirming manufacturers’ hope that the decline in demand for juice is becoming less steep and more manageable.

Competitive Landscape

Eckes-Granini Deutschland remained the leading player in juice in off-trade value terms in 2015. The company saw a small decline in its share in 2015, because of a tighter price policy, which resulted in fewer bargain offers. Private label continued to have a strong presence in juice in Germany in 2015, with the discounters Aldi and Lidl ranking second and third in value terms.

Industry Prospects

Juice is expected to see a further decline in volume sales over the forecast period 2015-2020, but the performance will still be better than that seen over the review period. Over the review period the decline was exacerbated by increases in commodity prices, particularly in orange juice. The dwindling popularity of juice amongst many consumers will continue, however, because juice manufacturers lack the marketing power of other big soft drinks players, such as Coca-Cola and Red Bull.
