Large cooking appliances are benefiting strongly from home ownership trends in the United Arab Emirates. The country is seeing a marked shift from renting to home ownership, with the share of rented homes dropping from 47% of the total in 2010 to 45% share in 2015. This was partly due to restrictions being lifted on non-Emiratis buying property and also occurred due to soaring rents, with many becoming tired of landlords renegotiating considerably higher rents each year and keen to invest in property. Simultaneously, there was a shift from unfurnished to semi-furnished property sales, with new-build homes increasingly offering fitted kitchens and many property investors refurbishing older homes with fitted kitchens before putting them up for sale. Fitted kitchens are increasingly viewed as a strong selling point for homes.

Competitive Landscape

BSH Home Appliances was the leading player in large cooking appliances in 2015 and accounted for 16% retail volume share, with the company achieving a good share gain of half a percentage point over the previous year. This company benefits from the strength of its Siemens and Bosch brands, which are present across all product areas in large cooking appliances. The company is the leading player in both built-in and freestanding large cooking appliances, thus benefiting from strong growth in the former area. Sales growth for built-in large cooking appliances was however hindered to an extent by stronger competition within built-in hobs and ovens, where strong price competition resulted in BSH losing share slightly to smaller lower-priced competitors.

Industry Prospects

Property trends will continue to benefit large cooking appliances in the forecast period. There is expected to be an ongoing shift from renting to owning property as consumers seek to cope with rising rents, while property sales will increasingly be linked to residents rather than investors. There will also be an ongoing trend from unfurnished to semi-furnished property sales, with competition in real estate encouraging construction companies and property developers investing in fitted kitchens in the hope of attracting customers at a higher sales price. Thanks to these trends, built-in large cooking appliances will continue to see sales soar in the forecast period, with a retail volume CAGR of 11% to reach 22% of sales by 2020. These trends will also result in the construction channel continuing to gain share in the forecast period.
