Given the fairly high penetration of digital TVs in Germany, it was somewhat unsurprising that overall retail volume sales declined in home video during 2015. Annual growth in volume sales of digital TVs has always been dictated to a large extent by the presence or absence of a major global sporting event such as the FIFA World Cup during the year in question. As there were no major sporting events broadcast on German television during 2015, home video declined by 6% in volume over the course of the year, a trend that is set to be further supported by the already high penetration of digital TVs in Germany. Nevertheless, when comparing percentage growth rates over the entire review period, the cumulative decline recorded in the category over the course of 2014 and 2015 was considerably lower than the cumulative decrease recorded in volume sales over the course of 2012 and 2013. This improvement in the category’s performance towards the end of the review period can be attributed mainly to relatively high volume sales of ultra-HD TVs in Germany during 2015, which led to rather positive development in the category, taking all of the factors inhibiting growth in home video mentioned above into consideration.

Competitive Landscape

Home video in Germany is now heavily dominated by international manufacturers. This is mainly due to the fact that these major multinational players have the necessary capacity to offer a broad range of different devices at relatively low prices, whereas domestic players such as Loewe AG continue to struggle to maintain profitability in a rapidly evolving category in which demand is becoming increasingly saturated.
