Apart from the effect of the lost consumer base in the Crimea and eastern regions, the category suffered the negative impact of the declining consumer spending power in Ukraine. Prices were rising dynamically, in line with the local currency devaluation, on a number of products, including childrenswear, which hit the category’s potential.
At the end of the review period childrenswear was characterised by a high fragmentation level, similarly to other apparel categories. Many people opted for no-name products from Asian countries and Turkey with brand chasing not particularly pronounced in childrenswear. Price and quality were the primary factors of choice in contrast to branding having a bigger effect on adultwear choices.

Childrenswear is expected to have its potential strongly undermined in future by the unfavourable economic situation in the country determining lower income levels and consumer confidence. Nonetheless, whilst some parents are expected to resort to second-hand stores or use second-hand childrenswear from relatives and friends even in the distant future, new purchases are expected to pick up with time in line with the eventual consumer income growth. Between 2015 and 2020 childrenswear is expected to see its value sales growing by 20% at constant 2015 prices, which is a strong improvement compared to the 6% decline over the review period.
