In 2015, Morocco recorded strong expansion in supermarkets and hypermarkets all over the country, as the two leading groups, Marjane Holding and Label’Vie, were competing against each other to get more outlets in different regions, especially in second-tier cities such as Nador and Guelmim. This strategy is expected to attract both citizens of these cities and people from smaller regions nearby, since independent small grocers have a limited range of first-need products such as oil, sugar and milk, with brands being very limited.

Competitive Landscape

In 2015, retail groups saw increasing competition. Label’Vie, Marjane Holding, Ynna Holding Group and BIM Stores continued their expansion without interruption, creating strong competition and a price war amongst the four major retailers. The aggressiveness of Label’Vie and BIM Stores was the most evident. Also, Marjane Holding with its Xpress Market brand has not yet had its last word. Meanwhile, Ynna Holding Group (Aswak Assalam) simply promises to engage in hard discounting. Whilst 2015 was the most dynamic in the recent history of large retailers, grocery retailers is expected to continue to experience major changes in the coming years.
