New Market Research Report: RTD Tea in Taiwan

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Sun Mar 27 2016

There were several huge tea contamination scandals in Taiwan during 2014 and 2015. Initially, Business Today magazine exposed 48 tea brands out of 53 that tested positive for excessive pesticide residues. Furthermore, there were eight samples taken from these 48 problematic products which even exceeded the pesticide restrictions of the Taiwanese government. Despite the fact that this scandal involved only bagged tea and loose tea, many people believed that RTD tea was also subject to excessive pesticides, which significantly affected sales of RTD tea.

Competitive Landscape

Cha Li Wang from Uni-President Enterprises Corp remained the leading brand in RTD tea in 2015 with a value share of 13%. Cha Li Wang has taken full advantage of its close relationship with the company which operates the 7-Eleven convenience stores chain in Taiwan to secure favourable shelf positioning for its products and to ensure that the full range of periods and flavours on offer under the brand are constantly available. Cha Li Wang has also benefited from price discounting campaigns in 7-Eleven outlets, which have stimulated the brand’s sales performance in recent years.

Industry Prospects

As Taiwanese people paid more attention to the quality of their RTD tea during 2014 and 2015, the first priority for manufacturers in the category during the forecast period should be to reinforce the image of their products as safe and free from excessive pesticide residues. this is likely to encourage consumers to consume more RTD tea as drinking tea remains an important part of Taiwanese culture. Furthermore, the image of RTD tea as a natural and healthy beverage among Taiwanese people, especially in comparison with carbonates and RTD coffee, is likely to benefit the category during the forecast period, resulting in moderately positive growth.
