We continue to believe that the combination of a slowing economy and a weakening Australian dollar will make 2016 a challenging year for Australia's new vehicl e sales market. We expect 2 .0 % sales growth for the sector as a whole, with the industry also gearing up for the imminent end of local production by 2017 .

Key Views

Over the 2016-2020 period, we expect new vehicle sales to show growth of 8.8%, to take sales over the 1.33mn unit mark by 2020.

We expect stronger sales growth from passenger car sales (9.3%) than commercial vehicle (6.8%) over our 2016-2020 forecast period.

All three of the manufacturers producing cars in Australia - Ford Motor Company, Toyota Australia and General Motors's (GM) Holden subsidiary - will cease local car and vehicle engine manufacturing operations by 2017.
