As local consumers continue to immerse themselves within fast-paced lifestyles, they are required to spend more time out of their homes, which often translates into the need of buying beverages for quenching their thirst and maintaining their bodies’ fluid balance. In such a context, bottled water demand in Costa Rica continues to recover from an overall lack of interest that overshadowed this category’s demand in exchange for more value-added products such as RTD tea, aloe drinks and juice over the review period. As local consumers start to realise the threats of ingesting drinks with high sugar content on a regular basis, they have increased their interest in the bottled water offer, complementing their demand of more functional beverages with the most basic and natural soft drink alternative available.

Competitive Landscape

The local player Florida Bebidas kept the leading position in bottled water sales during 2015, maintaining a 56% retail value share thanks to the wide availability and recognition of its brand Cristal, which is offered as natural spring water. Its large scale of distribution and manufacturing helps to explain the competitive advantage developed by this player throughout the years, which is complemented by its dominance in bulk water sales, a condition that also helps to build its top-of-mind brand recognition. In second place Coca-Cola FEMSA Costa Rica accounted for a 41% value share, benefiting from the sales inertia of its brand Agua Alpina, which tends to engage in rivalry and availability competition with the leading brand Cristal when it comes to pricing and value offers for individual packaging presentations which range from 300ml up to 2.5 litres.

Industry Prospects

Functional and more conceptual waters are anticipated to take the lead in relation to modern consumers’ expectations over the forecast period in Costa Rica, as consumers will start to demand additional value besides the pure water offer. In such a paradigm change, it is expected that an increasing number of brands capable of targeting niche-orientated consumers will start to emerge over 2015-2020, adopting environmental- and social-orientated causes to appeal to consumers to support and keep buying their brands.
