Slovakia's government appears committed to safeguarding the future of its coal mining sector for the time being. With around 90% of the country's energy imported from abroad, the government is under pressure to maintain electricity prices at an affordable level, and in February 2016 it secured approval to subsidise costs to heavy industry to the amount of EUR250mn.

We envisage Slovakia's total coal output to remain largely unchanged through our forecast period to 2020. Coal production is expected to grow by 0.6% to 2.30mn tonnes (mnt) in 2016, rising to 2.53mnt in 2020.

Mined gold production is expected to be resumed in Slovakia within the current forecast perdio following the decision by Ortac Resources to recommence operations at the Sturec deposit. Production should grow by 7.5% y-o-y over 2017-2020, reach ing 1,900oz.
