Germany had the world's sixth-largest proven coal reserves at 40.5 billion tonnes (Bnt) at the end of 2014, accounting for 4.5% of the global total. Proven coal reserves mainly consist of sub-bituminous and lignite grades which account for more than 99% of the country's total coal reserves.

Report Highlights

* The country was the world's eighth-largest coal producer, with production of 185.8 million tonnes (Mt) in 2014. Much of the coal produced is lignite, which is mainly used in coal-fired power plants while hard coal production originates from the three mines - Ibbenburen, Prosper-Haniel and Auguste Victoria in North Rhine-Westphalia.
* Lignite deposits are scattered across the areas of Rhineland, Helmstedt, central Germany and Lusatia. The average gross calorific value of lignite found in the country lies in the range of 1,864.2-2,700.8Kcal/kg.
* The German mining industry is governed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (FMET) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR). The Federal Mining Act 1980 is the main act regulating the country's mining industry.
