"Brazil Consumer Electronics Report Q3 2016" Published

Brazil's large electronics industry provided little insulation to the market in 2015, as a reliance on imported components and a sharp deterioration in household purchasing power resulted in a sharp contraction in spending on consumer electronics devices. We expect another year of contraction in 2016 as the economic and political crisis continues to evolve in Brazil, but the decline should not be as steep as in 2015. Conditions are expected to be less hostile from 2017 as growth returns and the currency stabilises, and there is potential for a bump in spending as deferred purchases are unlocked, but we caution that downside risk is elevated. Under our core scenario, we envisage a total device spending CAGR of 9.5% over 2016-2020.

Latest Updates & Industry Developments

Computer Hardware Sales: USD8.8bn in 2016 to USD14.6bn in 2020. A sharp deterioration in Brazilian purchasing power resulted in a collapse in demand for computer hardware, which means there is pent-up demand that will boost growth rates once economic conditions improve.
AV Sales: USD5.4bn in 2016 to USD7.3bn in 2020. Cannibalisation of digital camera volumes mean the AV market will not return to previous highs, but TV set replacement and upgrade spending will nonetheless put the market on a much stronger trajectory compared to 2015-16.
Mobile Handset Sales: USD12.2bn in 2016 to USD16.1bn in 2020. The smartphone penetration rate indicates there is still potential for strong growth in overall market value through first-time upgrades, but growth is expected to decelerate by the latter years of the forecast.
