Indonesia's tourism industry presents significant growth potential. The country's extensive and varied geography offers a broad range of attractions , and extensive government investment in transport infrastructure is improving regional and global connectivity. Wide-reaching marketing campaigns are raising awareness of the country's attractions outside of traditional regional source markets, including affluent markets in the Middle East. We expect to see steady increases in tourism arrivals over the forecast period between 2016 and 2020, though we do note some risks remain, including barriers to foreign investment and ongoing security concerns.

Key Updates A nd Forecasts

As well as improving international air connections, Indonesia is also expanding connectivity across its many islands. Budget airline Citilink Indonesia is now offering daily flights between Jakarta and the provincial capital of the country's westernmost province, Banda Aceh, and it is hoped that this flight will attract 10,000 foreign visitors and 100,000 domestic tourists annually.

Indonesia is reportedly strengthening its counterterrorism laws following a deadly terrorist attack in Jakarta in January 2016. Maintaining security is vital for the tourism industry, particularly as some government departments, such as Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, are warning tourists about advanced terrorism threats in the country which could deter potential visitors.

At present, we are forecasting steady growth in tourism arrivals to Indonesia, though a regional economic slowdown means our forecasts are slightly lower than in previous quarters. We now expect international arrivals to increase by an average of 2.4% annually over the forecast period, increasing from 9.7mn in 2016 to 10.4mn in 2020.
