Raising Kids Without a god: A Parenting Workshop

From: Humanists of Linn County
Published: Tue Aug 22 2017

On Saturday, August 26 2017 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, the Humanists of Linn County—along with Freethinking Families of Linn County, Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers, and the Central and Eastern Iowa Coalition of Reason—will be hosting a "Raising Secular Kids in a Religious World" workshop. The event—co-sponsored by Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers—is scheduled to take place at Indian Creek Nature Center, 5300 Otis Rd. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The workshop is designed to empower secular parents to raise ethical, caring, confident kids without religion.

Rory Moe, Coordinator of the Central Iowa Coalition of Reason remarked "The workshop is exactly the type of information so many of our non-theistic parents have been asking for! This will help them navigate in a world dominated by theism and lack of understanding towards the secular."

Topics covered in the workshop will be:
• Religious literacy-knowing about religion, even though you aren’t part of it
• Raising freethinkers (as opposed to raising atheists)
• Getting kids hooked on science and wonder
• Moral development
• A naturalist approach to death
• Finding communities

Volunteers will provide a separate activity track for the kids. Activities include various science experiments, storytelling, cartooning and an optional nature walk. Light refreshments will be served.

Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers (www.iowaatheists.org ) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit social and educational group working to provide a community of support and friendship for atheists, freethinkers, secular humanists, agnostics, and other non-religious people.

Eastern Iowa Coalition of Reason (www.eastiowacor.org) is made up of nine Iowa atheist, freethought, and humanist groups working together in the Eastern Iowa area. Their twin goals are to foster a sense of community among the like minded and raise public awareness that people who donÂ’t believe in a god or gods can be decent citizens who contribute to the larger society.

Central Iowa Coalition of Reason (www.centraliowacor.org) is a proactive partnership of four Iowa Atheist, Free-Thought advocates, and Humanist groups working together in the central Iowa region with a clear vision to foster a sense of community for the Secular among us and to raise the visibility of our efforts for those who have not yet found a Secular community through which they can thrive and feel welcome.

United Coalition of Reason (www.UnitedCoR.org), headquartered in Washington, DC is committed to promoting science and reason, nurturing unity and developing cooperation within local communities. They donate time, resources and cutting edge technology to help a variety of local non-theistic groups grow their presence, expand their outreach and present a positive face for non-theism by doing good together.
