In 1957, a group of community activists dedicated to grassroots advocacy for persons with mental illness established Broward County Florida's affiliate of the National Mental Health Association (now known as Mental Health America). In more recent years, Miami-Dade County was added to its service area and the affiliate became the Mental Health Association of Southeast Florida.

The Mental Health Association of Southeast Florida has just expanded its original mission of advocacy to also include education, prevention, research and empowerment. Information and referral, children’s mentoring programs, parent education and parent support, public and professional education, and the 9Muses Art Center (a drop-in center devoted to recovery through the arts) are among the many services offered to the community.

Now, more than ever, people are recognizing the role mental health plays in an individual’s overall health and the importance of maintaining and regaining good mental health.

The Mental Health Association of Southeast Florida is celebrating 60 Years of Wellness, the public is invited to join MHASEFL on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 from 6-8pm at Chima Steakhouse in Fort Lauderdale, to commemorate its efforts, recognize those involved in its growth and encourage others to join us in working for mental health and victory over mental illness.
