Composting Workshop To Illustrate Ways Of Reducing Domestic Waste Bills

The workshop will provide members of the public with a comprehensive understanding of composting, different composting systems, what materials can and cannot be composted, troubleshooting and how to compost effectively. A practical demonstration will take place while those in attendance will be also entered into a draw for a free composter.

The Scarriff Area Office, in conjunction with the Environment Section of Clare County Council, will host the event.

According to Marie O'Neill, Senior Staff Officer, "Staff in the Scarriff Area Office are delighted to host a composting demonstration for the public in the Scarriff electoral area. This is a wonderful opportunity for people to learn the basics of composting or how to compost more effectively. I am urging everybody to come along since it promises to be a very informative evening. A similar workshop will be held in the Westbury Area Office on Tuesday 8 July at 7pm."

Commenting ahead of next week's event, Joan Tarmey, Environmental Awareness Officer, said, "One of central government's targets is to reduce biodegradable waste consigned to landfill by a minimum of 65%."

She continued, "Organic waste like food scraps and garden waste can be easily composted and can represent between 30% to 50% of waste in the average household. Composting your organic waste will not only help you to reduce your domestic waste bill, but it will also help to divert waste away from landfill".

Clare Local Authorities is urging more householders to start composting, and has composters available, at a subsidised cost of EUR45, in six locations around the county.
