BEYOND IMPACT LAUNCHES SECOND ALT-PROTEIN FOOD AND MATERIALS INVESTMENT FUND

Beyond Impact, part of the Beyond Investing vegan investment platform, has launched its second Beyond Impact vegan venture capital fund specialising in early-stage investments in the future of food and materials. Its first fund, launched in March 2018, was the first European wholly plant-based and alternative protein venture capital investment vehicle.

Funds from Beyond Impact are invested in private companies whose products and services accelerate the transition away from using animals. A pioneer in alternative protein and materials investment, it has invested in a wide range of cutting-edge companies from cultivated meat to alternative leather and animal-testing alternatives.

The seed share class is fully subscribed with close to US$25 million of commitments and it anticipates final close with a target of US$110m in the first half of this year.

It will invest across up to 30 growth stage alternative protein food and materials companies - including plant-based foods, cultivated meats, fermentation-enabled products and other alternatives to meat, seafood, dairy and eggs, leather, wool, silk and other animal-derived materials and ingredients.

Founder and Chief Investment Officer Claire Smith says: "Beyond Impact's second fund will build upon the success of the first Beyond Impact vehicle, which made over 20 investments in this area. By supporting forward-thinking early-stage companies in their development we will further drive the necessary transition to a humane and sustainable world."

Beyond Impact has previously invested in the seed rounds of pioneering cell-based meat and fish companies Mosa Meat and BlueNalu, synthetic biology leaders Geltor and The EVERY Company, and plant-based consumer brands Meatless Farm and MIGHTY, among others.

The investment team is led by Claire Smith, former partner at pre-eminent alternative investment consulting firm Albourne Partners Limited. She is also renowned for launching the world's first cruelty-free and environmentally-conscious Exchange Traded Fund (ETF).

The team has already worked together on several of the current portfolio investments, and boasts skills in alternative investments, including VC and impact investing, company mentoring, and operational experience at senior levels at plant-based food and alternative protein companies.

The fund will invest globally in developed markets. Through the team's broad network across multiple regions and presence on the Beyond Animal deal database and funding platform, Beyond Impact has unparalleled visibility to cross-border, proprietary deal flow.

Smith adds: "As well as promoting a healthy, sustainable food supply, fund investments will benefit wider society and the environment by reducing animal suffering in agriculture, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing land and water use, reducing waste and therefore promoting biodiversity, lowering antibiotic use and reducing the risk of contagious and food-borne diseases."

When selecting investments, decisions are based on rigorous due diligence and adherence to at least seven of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - including gender equality, clean water and sanitation, climate action, responsible consumption and production, life on land, life below water as well as the Beyond group's specific goal of zero animal exploitation.
