Based in Columbus, Ohio, in the USA, the Trivantis Corporation produces authoring and publishing tools, along with a learning management system that are designed to help overcome the technical barriers traditionally associated with electronic publishing, Trivantis’ solutions provide educators, the business sector and government agencies with the capabilities to create and publish high-quality content with multi-platform publishing capabilities.

"Naturally, we’re delighted to have been upgraded in our business relationship with Trivantis," commented Trainer1’s Neil Lasher, who is also the President of the ASTD Global Network UK and a committee member of the eLearning Network (eLN), the UK’s foremost professional association for users and developers of e-learning. "Trivantis is highly respected in the e-learning world, having led the way in providing the first AICC certified product in the authoring tool category and continuing to be a front-runner in helping to set such international standards as SCORM and LRN.

"Trivantis’ products – Lectora authoring and publishing tools and its CourseMill learning management system – are among the most popular e-learning related tools and systems that we supply to the UK market," he said.

The Lectora authoring tool, which provides single-click publishing to web-ready dynamic HTML, CD, single file executable, SCORM, AICC and LRN learning standards, contains, among other things:
• An Actions Palette which enables users to create unlimited interactive learning objects using show and hide functionality, mouse-overs, object visibility toggling, executables and so on to create didactic and/or branched learning scenarios.
• Flash Conversion to automatically compress and convert video and audio to Flash format. Lectora 2008 provides better compression for faster loading of content, smaller file sizes to free up bandwidth space, complete browser compatibility and the option to view videos in full screen.
• Help Agents – interactive video help guides which provide animated tutorials on the key features in Lectora.
• A Media Library – one central location for media files, which can now include keywords and metadata to simplify searches and is accessible by multiple users.
• A Certificate Tool to create customisable template-based certificates.
• An Easy Access Template Gallery, offering access more than 250 templates within Lectora.
• Content Protection which makes it nearly impossible for students to copy and paste from course pages.

Trivantis’ CourseMill 5.0 is still a Java application on the server’s side but the client side of the equation uses the – simpler – AJAX application.

"This means that there are better cataloguing and ‘search for courses’ facilities," commented Lasher. "Moreover, courses now run in ‘sessions’; it includes a ‘classroom booking system’, copes with multiple instructors on one course and the product handles SCORM, AICC and non-compliant courses.

"It also allows courses to run in ‘SCORM disconnected’ mode," Lasher added. "This enables users to sign up for a course, download it, work on the course off-line and, when they next connect to the internet, their scores are automatically uploaded to the learning management system.

"In addition, CourseMill 5.0 allows you to set up separate learning management systems – for separate departments, divisions or even companies within a group. This enables you to keep data for employees in these sectors separate but also allows you to combine data as required," explained Lasher.

"And, impressively, CourseMill can be installed and operating within a single business day on a standard Microsoft-based server environment," he said. "No wonder that CourseMill – and Lectora – are proving popular with e-learning developers and managers in the UK."
