The funding from the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is additional to the EUR24.5 million granted to the local authority in May.

Minister Killeen said that the extra funding would greatly assist the operational capacity of the Council’s three new housings schemes for the elderly and disabled, which replaced the Disabled Persons Grants, Housing Aid for the Elderly and the Essential Repairs schemes earlier this year.

The Clare T.D. added, ‘I am delighted that the additional funding has been granted, as it will be greatly benefit the elderly and persons with a disability through the development of a range of works. These works include extensions, access ramps, stair lifts, downstairs toilet facilities, repairs to doors and windows, heating, structural repairs, improvement of water and sanitary services and other repair works, which are considered reasonably necessary.’

‘Prior to finishing up in June as Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, I stressed the need for supplementary funding to be allocated to Clare Local Authorities to support its social housing programme. I also recently facilitated a meeting between the Council and Minister of State Michael Finneran on the topic of additional funding. I hope the EUR500k allocation will facilitate the improvement of living conditions for the elderly and persons with a disability, therefore enabling them to live comfortably in their own homes and communities for as long as possible’, concluded the Junior Agriculture Minister.
