Confirming the announcement following a meeting with Minister of State Sean Haughey, Minister of State Tony Killeen said that the awarding of DEIS status to Scoil Mhaínchín will ensure that the school benefits from a comprehensive package of supports.

He explained, ‘The Department has a range of programmes including Early Start to address educational disadvantage under the DEIS action plan. As part of DEIS the Department is developing supports for early childhood education to complement childcare services in disadvantaged communities’

The North Clare T.D. said he expected Scoil Mhaínchín to benefit greatly under the DEIS Programme.

‘Earlier this year the Government announced almost EUR10 million in funding from the Dormant Accounts Fund and the Rapid Leverage Fund to enhance supports for children in DEIS schools and pre-schools’, stated Minister of State Killeen.

‘The projects undertaken as part of the DEIS Programme in 2008 include the enhancement of facilities in feeder pre-schools for DEIS schools and provision of integrated pre-school provision for Traveller children. Up to 100 DEIS schools have achieved Digital School Status while others have benefited greatly from the library enhancement programme’, concluded the Junior Agriculture Minister.
