PR agency Lawson Dodd is adding a new dimension to its skills base by retaining a high-profile strategic media planner to oversee research and strategic planning across the consultancy’s business.

Katherine Almond becomes associate media director, and will report into agency heads Belinda Lawson and Joanna Dodd.

Almond was Board Director at Abbot Mead Vickers, then Board Director and Strategic Planning Director at Pattison Horswell Durden (PHD), running the centralised strategic planning on BT's account. She will continue to run her qualitative research company, working for clients such as the British Heart Foundation, Virgin Atlantic, The Daily Mail and Jaguar. She has won numerous media planning awards, including the only gold award at the inaugural (1998) Campaign Media awards – for Yellow Pages.

Joanna Dodd said: "We have a fantastic media relations team in our agency – Katherine’s role will be to add focus and provide our clients with points of view and experience that are not normally found in PR consultancies. This focus will make our campaigns even more effective and offer our clients better value."

Katherine Almond said: "When I worked in media agencies, PR was a poor relation, and given little credence. However, moderating countless focus groups over the past six years has brought home to me just how false it can be to draw distinctions between different disciplines. It is all communication, and from a client's perspective, it is important that it is all well planned and accurately targeted. I will be offering Lawson Dodd access to the media planning skills which are normally only found in the big media agencies."
