H. Woodward Middleton Joins SfL+a Architects As Principal Architect

SfL+a Architects (www.sfla.biz), has announced that H. Woodward Middleton, AIA, has joined the firm as a principal architect. In this position, he will be responsible for strategic project management and will focus his immediate attention on implementing the firm’s Dragonfly™ building design. Middleton’s professional career spans more than 45 years of recognized architectural work. He has held leadership positions at the firms of A G Odell Jr. & Associates, Middleton McMillan Architects of Charlotte and The Preston Partnership, based in Atlanta. His portfolio is focused on the design of "complex building types" and features architectural projects in numerous markets, including medical, government, education, retail, commercial, multi-family residential and the cultural and performing arts.

Charlotte/Mecklenburg projects of note for Middleton include Spirit Square, the Charlotte/Mecklenburg Main Library, the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, the Charlotte/Mecklenburg Law Enforcement Center and the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. Middleton was actively involved in bringing the four statues to the corner of Trade and Tryon Streets which represent transportation, future, commerce and industry. Significant regional projects include Elliot White Springs Memorial Hospital, Wake Forest/Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Duke Medical Center’s Comprehensive Clinical Cancer Research Center, Durham County Regional Hospital, Carolinas Medical Center Orthopedic Rehabilitation Hospital and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Cameron Applied Research Center.

In the 1970’s, Middleton was selected by the U.S. Department of Justice to design a new concept in the incarceration and behavioral treatment of inmates of the Federal Bureau of Prisons located in Butner, N.C; later renamed the Behavioral Research Center/Federal Correctional Institution. The project later added a 1000 bed medium security prison and an acute medical/surgical and acute psychiatric Medical Center to serve the eastern part of the country. The "Direct Supervision" management style evolved from Middleton’s Butner concept and is now considered the norm for inmate management throughout the country for federal and state prisons, as well as local jails.

Middleton’s professional and community affiliations include currently the American Institute of Architects (AIA) – National, State, and Local; National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, North Carolina and South Carolina registered architect, AIA Committee on Design, AIA Committee for Justice, and Charlotte Museum of History Board of Advisors. His past affiliations have included registered architect for Alabama, Florida, Virginia, and West Virginia, member of American Correctional Association, American Jail Association, American Hospital Association, American Arbitration Association as Arbitrator and Mediator for 32 years, Board of Advisors for Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Representative for United Way Professional Division (3 years), Mint Museum of Art Board of Directors, Wing Haven Sanctuary Board of Directors, Spirit Square Center for the Arts Board of Directors, and the North Carolina Dance Theater Board of Directors.

Middleton, currently residing in Charlotte, is a native of Charleston, and Sumter, SC.
